This figure was revealed in a report by UN agencies such as the World Health Organization , UNICEF and the World Bank . In India , nearly 19,000 women died during pregnancy or childbirth in 2023. This means that an average of 52 women die every day due to pregnancy-related complications . In most cases, pregnant women die due to chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease . In some cases, deaths are due to lack of sanitation and infections. Half of the world's maternal deaths occur in just 4 countries. Half of the total maternal deaths in the world each year occur in just four countries - Nigeria , India, Congo and Pakistan . Nigeria has the highest number of deaths at 19,000.
