One Pregnant Woman Dies Every Two Minutes

 


In 2023, about 2.6 million women died during pregnancy or childbirth. This means that one woman dies every two minutes. This figure was revealed in a report by UN agencies such as the World Health Organization, UNICEF and the World Bank.

In India, nearly 19,000 women died during pregnancy or childbirth in 2023. This means that an average of 52 women die every day due to pregnancy-related complications.



In most cases, pregnant women die due to chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. In some cases, deaths are due to lack of sanitation and infections.


Half of the world's maternal deaths occur in just 4 countries. Half of the total maternal deaths in the world each year occur in just four countries - Nigeria, India, Congo and Pakistan.


Nigeria has the highest number of deaths at 19,000. India is in second place in this regard, with 19,000 deaths annually, followed by Congo at 18,000 and Pakistan at 11,000.


From 2000 to 2023, maternal mortality worldwide has decreased by 40 percent. This is mainly due to increased access to and improvement in the quality of health care during this period.
